Raw Songwriting

I sat down with David Coile for a short interview for his podcast "Raw Songwriting"  "Raw" meaning 1st draft, In progress,  not entirely cooked. It's looking at the process of songwriting, not just the song.

It dropped recently, but it took me a couple of days to get up the nerve to listen to it.  I know David, We get along well. I enjoy talking with him and yet ...  Raw.  "Raw" meaning tender, sensitive, vulnerable. Sometimes I have very little emotional bubble wrap.

But truly, all songwriting is raw. Songs are fragile and intensely personal.  For some of us, a thoughtless remark or unsolicited opinion can squash a song in progress.  That would never happen with David, but sometimes my irrational vulnerability needs a moment and a hug.

I know I'm tough. I surf all kinds of intense situations. But by the end of the day, I need to sit on the beach and catch my breath. If I'm quiet, still, and patient, sometimes songs tiptoe in. Sometimes doubts and fears sneak in too.

Oprah (and a ton of others) said "Courage is feeling the fear and doing it anyway." Susan Jeffers said "The fear will never go away as long as you continue to grow!" I am constantly growing with my songwriting. I'm a songwriter. It's not what I do, it's who I am.

What does your courage look like? How does it show you who you are?
